Scene two: BEEEP BEEEP! ”Excuse me! I was waiting for that parking space! Now I am going to be even later for work.” Kira couldn’t find her keys this morning, woke up too late to have breakfast, now she has a hunger headache and its just 8:15! To make matters worse she was supposed to be at a meeting at 8:00. Time never seems to be on her side. Where does the time go? Why is that whenever she tries to get to work on time something always goes wrong?
Scene 3: It’s Sunday night almost 11:40 pm and Tanya has a research paper due tomorrow that is worth 30% of her final grade. She has done most of the background work but has yet to start writing out the rough draft. She knows that English isn’t her best subject so she has been avoiding completing this paper for the past week. Now her time has almost run out. She will have to pull another all nighter to get it finished in time but that will leave no time for editing. Oh well she tried her best right?
Procrastination has been labeled the thief of time and money. Is it really a thief or are we giving away our precious comodities. If you find that you can identify with any of the above scenarios let’s answer some questions that will hopefully give you a little more insight on the root of your procrastination habit.
As with most habitual behavior we must start at the beginning.
First in your journal or on a sheet of paper ask yourself these questions:
1. What one thing am I always late doing?
2. Do I see this as something I can control?
3. What do I gain from continuing this practice?
4. What am I losing by continuing this practice?
5. Is what I am losing worth more to me than what I am gaining by continuing this practice?
Take some time to sit and reflect on these questions. See if your answers help you figure out what your next steps need to be.
Shining Out!
